The Recreation and Parks Department is proud to announce a new section to their web site.

"Growing Healthy Foods Challenge "is a web-base instructional module integrating gardening techniques and practices and nutrition basics using a STAR module. The module will present a challenge (to grow half of the food for a gathering of six to eight people), which will act as a unifying theme for the unit.

Gardening content will involve gardening techniques, the use of community gardens, a local program that promotes healthy eating among families, and how to plan and schedule a garden for the entire year.

Nutrition content will relate to major nutrients and their food sources, eating plans, and how to interpret the information on food-labels. Some healthy recipes are included in the presentation.

The site can be accessed at:

Comments or additional information about gardening, recipes, or healthy eating in general is welcome.

From the Baldwin Community Garden group-

"The Baldwin Community Garden seeks members from the Broad St. and Northside neighborhoods, and will prioritize residents of those areas when allotting growing beds within the garden. Gardening space is available to members outside of the immediate neighborhood, however registration for this group will take place after the registration period for local residents. Residents from our target area will be able to sign up first come first serve until March 15th, after which point anyone from the greater Carrboro/Chapel Hill community can join. Membership outreach has consisted of direct soliciting to the target neighborhood by existing members to neighbors and door-to-door flyering. Success by these methods have been limited due to the infancy of the garden until now. We believe that continued outreach will result in more local interest now that the construction phase is completed, members are actively growing produce, and we now have experienced Master Gardeners from the Northside garden amongst out members. "

CARRBORO~ A BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

"The Town of Carrboro has made an ongoing commitment to bicycle facility planning since the mid-1970s. Over the past 25 years, the town has utilized its bonding authority to develop bike lanes and bike paths, has worked cooperatively to include bike lanes in all state road improvement projects, and has amended its street standards to include bike lanes as a requirement on all collector roads. In recognition of these accomplishments, Carrboro was recently recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists."
