| Raleigh
Little Theatre - The Boy Friend |
| The Jazz
Age lives on in this light romantic spoof of 1920's musical
comedy. With its catchy tunes, period dances (including
the Charleston) and winning sense of humor, it is a sparkling,
tongue-in-cheek 1920's romp in the spirit of No, No, Nanette.
Written in the fifties as "a new musical of the twenties,"
this is still considered the most successful, and witty
of the send-up musicals, with the style of earlier, lighter-hearted
and more disarming days. |

Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre - Pathway
to Freedom |
| Come watch
this amazing Outdoor Drama in Snow Camp NC. Pathway to
Freedom is an exciting account of the struggles and heroism
of the 1840's and 1850's along the "Underground Railroad"
from North Carolina to Indiana. Both individuals and some
of the organized religions fought slavery in the legislature
and on the farms, while some, like Levi and Katie Coffin
of Guilford County led volunteers and free slaves in clandestine
efforts to help escaping slaves to freedom. We will be
having dinner before the performance. Be sure to bring
money for dinner. You must register by June 15th. |

POETRY - But Is It...? |
How can you
real tell if something is poetry? It's true: the lines
have been blurred to the point where there are barely
any lines at all, and even they are looking willowy-light
these days. Today in class we will read and discuss poetry
of a new kind of (20th century) formalism: poems that
are unabashedly formal, tightly structured, and unapologetically
modern POETRY, capital P, fino! (W.H. Auden, Marianne
Moore, and Peter Viereck among them.) Look for "imaginary
gardens with real toads in them

POETRY - A Vacation From Poetry |
| In June we
talked about the line between prose and poetry, and today
we are going to cross it again and maybe back again more
than once - considering the poetry of prose: not prose
poetry, but the beauty of poetic ideas in prose form:
Richard Brautigan, Lydia Davis and Michael Chibon will
all be featured.

Tennis - Adult Intermediate |
|
To join this class you should have established a good
tennis foundation on which to build. Intermediates have
reliable and repeatable strokes with a good understanding
of the game. This can involve players who (have not
played for a number of years or who are strong in some
areas, but need help in other areas, and players who
have previously taken beginning classes and are highly
motivated to improve. We will focus on all essential
areas of the game: Stroke techniques, fitness/movement,
strategy, mental awareness. You will be shown how to
assess you own game and be able to follow a customized
program for improvement. Bring your own racket. For players
with well-developed skills. Minimum skills: fairly consistent
playing at a medium pace and play with some placement
and variety. Stroke and fitness drills and individual
instruction improve on your skills and learn to use
spin, ball control, and team-work in doubles. Error
detection and correction will help smooth out the rough
edges. Self-awareness, understanding professional strokes,
and developing your own style will be emphasized. More
advanced players are welcome as well. Students may continue
to practice together after/between classes.
