Carrboro Recreation and Parks offer special events that are free or inexpensive and provide a great way to enjoy your leisure time with friends or family. Some programs may require registration.

Celebrating Carrboro!

Join neighbors and friends and celebrate the unique qualities that make our town special. Enjoy story sharing, live music, poetry, interactive craft demonstrations, craft vendors plenty of family games. We will have food trucks on site serving great fresh local fare. Fishing Rodeo
Co-sponsored with the Orange County Recreation and Parks Department and the Orange County 4-H with support from area civic clubs and businesses.

Carrboro July 4th Celebration

Join us in celebrating the birth of our Nation! Bring your friends and family out to enjoy a variety of musical performances, entertainers, face painting, and games. The excitement begins on Weaver Street Lawn with a costume contest. Decorate your bike or wagon for the traditional Main Street parade to Town Hall where you can party the day away with live musical bands. Listen to a great mix of Oldies, Classic Rock, Blues, swing and jazz. Let's get this party started.

Pre-Event starts at 9:30am at Weaver Street Market!

Free Friday Night Flicks

Bring your blanket to Century Hall for fun family movie night! Children under 12 will not be admitted without a parent or guardian present. Limited concessions will be for sale (cash only).

Arts, Crafts and Collectibles Fair

This annual fair provides local venders and artists a chance to share their goods with the citizens of Carrboro. Items range from artistic creations and jewelry to collectible toys, comics and cards. Come find the perfect present for friends and family or that hard to find comic book issue you've been looking for.
Interested in becoming a vender? Limited spaces are available. Vender Fee: $10.

Tennis Play Day

CO-SPONSORED BY DURHAM ORANGE COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATION
Join us at Wilson Park in Carrboro to participate in a Tennis Play Day on June 29th. Participants will learn tennis skills and be able to test those skills in games and challenges. This event will have activities for the oldest and youngest members of your family, so bring everyone along. We will supply the equipment; all you need to do is come prepared for fun! Prior tennis experience not necessary!

Family Paddle

Offered in partnership with the HAW RIVER CANOE & KAYAK COMPANY

Come have fun, learn canoeing, play games, meet friends and learn to canoe with your kids…during our Family Fun Instruction and Trip. Canoeing is a wonderful family activity! This class will teach your family the basics you need to safely enjoy canoeing, opening a whole world of fun and adventure. We will cover the basic strokes and techniques, then head out to explore. Spend some time with the little ones while learning a new family sport. This program is designed to allow families to go at their own pace with the help and guidance of certified instructors with proper equipment.

Lollipop Series for Young Children
A special series of performances for younger children and the young at heart.
Grey Seal Puppets in…A Tangle of Tales
Three favorite folk tales from around the world come to life with a touch of the familiar and a taste of the new. Using a variety of puppet styles, "The Frog Prince" from Germany, "Three Billy Goats Gruff" from Scandinavia and "The Three Little Pigs" from England are each told with refreshing wit and wisdom. In between each of the tales there's a whole menagerie of zany characters to see and enjoy. Tangle of Tales is fun for everyone!

Trish Miller

Trish Miller loves performing music for children. She uses movement, songs, shakers, puppets, and her big guitar to entertain and capture the imagination of pre-schoolers. Themes like colors, numbers, shapes, stop & go, reading, letters, and opposites are presented in a lively, interactive format.

Dale Smith
Dale's lovable friends will keep you laughing with their silly songs and crazy antics. There is "Claudine," who is clever, sassy, flirtatious, and always has an answer for everything. "Granny Lois," everyone's "granny is also a great storyteller! Then there is "Roscoe the Dog,"...cute, cuddly and a canine friend to all. Finally, the newest additions to Dale's family are "Ed," the shy little red-haired boy who is in love with all the girls, "Dorothy Ann," the Southern Belle, and "Buttercup," a mischievous baby who is just learning to talk. In addition to her ventriloquism, Dale includes music, storytelling and plenty of audience participation.

Breakfast with an Expert
Listen to local experts discuss their field of knowledge while enjoying fresh hot coffee, fruit and muffins courtesy of the Recreation and Parks Department. All programs start at 9:30am and last 1-1½ hours unless otherwise noted.
Healthy Aging: You Are What You Eat
Susan Wyler from Triangle Nutritional Wellness at Chapel Hill Doctors Integrative Health Center will discuss the aging process while offering practical ways to adjust diet and lifestyle choices to maintain vigor, energy and focus as long as possible. In addition, she will cover the importance of nourishing the micro flora in our gut and getting enough fiber and micronutrients through whole foods rather than supplements whenever possible.

Meet the Carrboro Police Department K-9 Unit
Come and enjoy an exciting demonstration by the Carrboro Police Department's K-9 unit. Officers will demostrate how these highly trained canine beauties are used to sniff out drugs. Officers will discuss other K-9 duties, training techniques, and will take questions. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet andpet the dogs one-on-one.

Poet's Open Mic Night
Join Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department and Open Eye Cafe the first Tuesday of each month for POETS OPEN MIC NIGHT. This is a night where poets can engage with others and share the power and diversity of poetry. This event is staged to provide the venue for people to celebrate, to share, and to encourage the writing, reading, and listening of poetry.

Chalk It Up Contest
Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department's First Annual Chalk It Up Contest. Get your creative juices flowing and transform the Town Hall Pavilion sidewalks into colorful, chalky creations. We will supply you with the chalk to create your masterpiece (no outside materials allowed). Trophies will be awarded to the Best of Show in each division (Youth, Teen, Adult and Professional). Judges' decisions are final. Register to be a part of this exciting new community event.

Natyarpana School of Dance and Music
The performers from the Natyarpana School of Dance & Music will perform dance items that represent a traditional Bharatanatyam recital. Each item will be preceded by a brief history of the art form and a description of the item that will help the audience understand the art form better. The dance items themselves will reflect the essence of Bharatanatyam - a disciplined and humble endeavor to achieve eternal bliss through movement in music.

Zumba Jam

The Zumba® program fuses Latin and international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an exciting and dynamic fitness program. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. The great thing about the Zumba Fitness program is that it puts the fun back in your fitness program. You do not feel like you're working out - the entire class takes on a party atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more!

Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers of all ages regularly share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or assisting with large events, serving on town advisory boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some activities require the contribution of many hours others call for only a few hours of time.
