Carrboro Recreation and Parks offer special events that are free or inexpensive and provide a great way to enjoy your leisure time with friends or family. Some programs may require registration.

Registration opens Wednesday, January 8 - unless otherwise noted.

Special event volunteers are needed to assist with community events throughout the year. If you would like to be involved please call 918-7364 OR complete a VOLUNTEER INTEREST FORM. These forms are available at the Recreation and Parks offices, 100 North Greensboro Street and also on this web site

    This popular series returns with a variety of musical experiences, there is something for everyone, so come in and enjoy free live music! Just bring your lunch to Century Hall every Thursday in January & February and enjoy free concerts featuring the best of local and regional bands! Last year's shows were packed to capacity, so come early! Free coffee is provided courtesy of Open Eye Café.

    Carrboro Kite Fly

    Celebrate National Kite Flying Month by flying a kite! Kite flying is an ageless activity that can be enjoyed whether you are 2 or 90 years old! This welcome-to-spring event provides plenty of fun. Bring a kite and help fill the skies with color! A few kites will be available for those without one. This event will be cancelled if it is raining.

    "RISING STARS"- VOCAL SHOWCASE

    There are lots of talented young singers in area... are you one of them?
    Enter the "Rising Stars" Vocal Showcase competition for youth and teens, and you could be named one of the top singers in the area!

    BOTH soloists and musical groups are welcome to participate.
    Vocal Showcase Categories: (Age as of January 1, 2014): Soloists Youth (Ages 10-13), Soloists Teens (Ages 14-18), and Group Performances (Ages 10-18)

    Flashlight Egg Hunt - NEW!

    Just because kids are older doesn't mean they can't enjoy an Egg Hunt! Youth ages 11 to 14 are invited to bring their flashlights out and enjoy a fun Egg Hunt in the dark! 1000's of eggs filled with prizes and candy will be hidden! Special "Golden Eggs" will be hidden for special prizes! No pre-registration required.

    NOTE: Youth MUST bring their own flashlight and bag/ basket to collect the eggs.

    Orange County Egg Hunt Celebration

    The Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department, along with the Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks & Recreation, and the Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Department will sponsor a spring celebration for children ages 2-10 years. Free activities include a Giant Egg Hunt for three age groups, live children's entertainment, and games. Fun for the whole family!

    Carrboro Open Streets

    Do you want to be part of a growing movement, and enjoy a day of free activities with your family, friends and neighbors? Then don't miss Carrboro Open Streets! Bike, walk, skate, dance and play in a traffic-free public space on West Weaver Street, closed to cars on this day. Also called ciclovías, Open Streets events are held in cities around the world to build community, promote health and well-being, and raise awareness of transportation options. Activities will include a rock climbing wall, a kids' bike loop, beverages from the bike blender, games, booths, prizes and much more. Join us in supporting and enjoying a people-friendly Carrboro - see you at Open Streets!

    Village Band in The Commons: Music for Spring
    The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department proudly presents a Community Concert by The Village Band of Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Organized in 1974 as a non-profit community concert band, The Village Band promotes classic town band music in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and surrounding communities. The Band will perform a variety of classic community band music including marches, classical and contemporary pieces.

    Celebrate Earth Day!
    These events for youth and families are designed to bring attention to Earth Day through fun family activities. All events are FREE!
    Earth Day Youth Poetry & Art Contest

    Youth in grades K-12 can submit art for display and /or an original poem, all themed around Earth Day! Submissions must be based on the themes of the Earth, the Environment, and Nature. Family and friends are invited to the Century Center on Thursday April 24 starting at 6:00pm to view all the art submissions and listen to the young poets.
    Categories: (Each Category will have winners from the each of the following Grade Level Groups: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12)

  • Poetry (may not exceed 80 lines)

  • 2D Art (crayons, pencils, paint, ink, markers, photography (at least 8"x10"), collage, digital art)

  • 3D Art (ceramics, mixed-media)

  • Entries and submission forms can be dropped off at the Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department Office, located at the Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro Street, Carrboro, Monday through Friday, between 8:30am-5pm. Deadline: April 11, 2014.

    Take a Kid Hiking
    Come take a short late afternoon hike at Wilson Park. Hike will be led by Recreation and Park Staff. This is a Parent/Child activity and parents or adult chaperones must be present and participate in the hiking activity. ALL Ages Welcome! No pre-registration needed.

    Keep Carrboro Beautiful!


    Bring the family out to help clean-up the Town of Carrboro and prevent trash from entering our local streams. Bring your work gloves and dress to be outside. Volunteers will meet at the Century Center at 9:00am and clean-up supplies provided. Scout groups and youth groups are welcome to participate.

    Arts, Crafts and Collectibles Fair

    This annual fair provides local venders and artists a chance to share their goods with the citizens of Carrboro. Items range from artistic creations and jewelry to collectible toys, comics and cards. Come find the perfect present for friends and family or that hard to find comic book issue you've been looking for.

    Snakes Alive

    Ron Cromer will show a slide presentation which is coordinated with a discussion of various topics. The topics include the dispelling of common myths associated with snakes, the proper way to hold a snake, pattern identification, an overview of a snake's anatomy and characteristics, and a strong warning concerning the handling of snakes found in the wild. The participants will learn about the characteristics of poisonous snakes, feed and iguana, and experience a snake's awesome ability to swallow a fish or an earthworm.The "hands-on" session is an opportunity to hold and pet more than a dozen tamed snakes. This session concludes with a finale of a giant python available for holding and petting. A "snake-free" zone will be provided for those who do not feel comfortable participating in the petting session.

    ZUMBA JAM
    The Zumba® program fuses Latin and international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an exciting and dynamic fitness program.     Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers of all ages regularly share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or assisting with large events, serving on town advisory boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some activities require the contribution of many hours others call for only a few hours of time. Not only can you share your talents, you can have fun, make new friends and discover more about your town.
